We are a group of individuals and organisations working towards a common goal: ensuring the protection of Afromontane forest at Mount Moco Special Reserve, by working with local communities and ensuring their natural resource needs are met.

Meet the team:

Michael Mills is a South African ornithologist who has been working on bird projects in Angola since 2003. See the Birds Angola website for more details. Michael holds a MSc in Conservation Biology from the University of Cape Town and guides specialist birdwatching tours for Birding Africa throughout the African continent.
Martim Melo is a Portuguese ornithologist with an interest in bird evolution and conservation. Martim has worked extensively on the Gulf of Guinea islands, and holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. He is currently based at the Percy FitzPatrick Institute at the University of Cape Town
Juares Bongo works for Ecovisão Angola, being responsible for environmental education programmes in Huambo province. These have included the communities living around Mount Moco. Juares keeps a montly eye on the nursery at Kanjonde.
The Luanda International School in Luanda is our in-country project partner. Teachers from the school are supporting the Mount Moco project by growing trees in their nursery facility in Luanda, providing logistical support during our visits, and are involving interested students in the work we are doing.
Juliet Mills teaches science and biology at Luanda International School. She has run many 'green' school activities and is currently involving the Year 12 IB Diploma biology students in propagating Mount Moco forest tree species back in Luanda, and also fund-raising to purchase fuel-efficient cooking stoves. She has travelled to many parts of Angola, often with birding groups or the Angola Field Group
José Dala is a young Angolan biologist, busy finishing his degree in Biology at the Science Faculty of the Agostinho Neto University in Luanda and specialising on vertebrates. His research project is on the birds of Mount Moco.
Feliciano Tchalo is a young Angolan biologist, finishing his degree in Biology at ISCED in Lubango. His research project is on the natural resource uses by residents of Kanjonde village.
Francisco Maiato is an Angolan botanist and curator of the plant collection at the herbarium at ISCED in Lubango. Francisco has collected plants at Mount Moco.
Aimy Cáceres is a Peruvian biologist with an interest in conservation and natural resources management. She had participated in projects in Angola, Argentina, Brazil and Peru, and is currently studying towards her masters degree at the University of Porto in Portugal. Her project will be on the ecotourism potential of Mount Moco.
Ernst van Jaarsveld is a botanical horticulturalist working for the South African National Biodiversity Institute at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. He joined our 2010 expedition to Mount Moco, where he made extensive plant collections and helped establish the nursery at Kanjonde Village.

Fernanda Lages is a senior biologist based at ISCED in Lubango, and knows how to make things happen.
Fábio Olmos is a Brazilian conservationist and ornithologist, with many years of practical experience working in Africa and South America . Fábio was part of the expedition to Mount Moco in 2008.
